Whole Wheat Pancakes
I’m most proud of delicious recipes that come from mild changes to our favourite ones. Case and point – the following pancake recipe.
Yet can you really re-invent a pancake? Of course!
Truth is, I’ve been using the same pancake recipe for longer than I could admit. It’s one that calls for few but basic ingredients.
Yet since we’ve started making small switches to our meals to make them healthier options, I recently studied my go-to recipe for pancakes and decided it was due for an overhaul.
I realized that I could easily make my recipe one I could feel better about with the addition of wheat.
Opting to use whole wheat flour in everyday recipes, like this one for pancakes – is a simple switch for the good. Wheat is a great source of fibre and can aid to normalize bowel movements and help overall gut health.
It also lowers cholesterol levels, helps to control blood sugar levels, makes you feel full longer, contains essential vitamins and minerals, and aids in achieving healthy weight.
In other words, consuming wheat and grains can help you live longer, lose weight and lower your risk for type 2 diabetes. It’s life’s simple ingredient that you can feel good about.
My home province of Alberta has 50.3 million acres of productive farm land alone, and our wheat that has been fuelling our lives for centuries. Not only a versatile staple, this simple ingredient is also cost effective as well. How’s that for a win-win!
Can you make pancakes with whole wheat flour?
Absolutely!
Looking back, I’m not sure why I didn’t make an earlier switch to whole wheat in this recipe. After all, I very much enjoy my recipe for 12 Hour No-Knead bread for use as a side, for toast and even for sandwiches. So it’s no surprise to me that this very well may be the best whole wheat pancake recipe ever.

I was totally thinking about upping the health factor on pancakes – there are so many things you can do to make them healthier and mmm so tasty! Did you use real Canadian maple syrup? 😀 I could drink that stuff lol!

I’ll have to give these a try. I make from scratch pancakes already but I want to try a whole wheat recipe and this one sounds perfect.

This recipe was a disaster for me. The batter was too thick even after I added twice as much milk than was originally called for. the outsides were burning before the inside was done. I’ll have to figure out what went wrong.
Tammi says
What? That is so odd Amy! Mine turned out so perfect, I’ll think on this about what went wrong and reply if I come to a solution. Right now I’m at a loss though … 🙁

I had to keep adding milk to get desired consistency. They turned out fine.
