If you have kids, you know how to throw a party. Thanks to the many holidays and birthdays we’ve been through already; we can pull it off gorgeously, like a boss. Sure there’s to-do lists, to-buy lists, a guest list, and some baking involved – but it’s all worth it.
Everyone loves a party, and it brings so much happiness to everyones faces. Yet, holidays and birthdays aren’t the only excuses to throw a party. The best ones planned are for the not-so-obvious reasons, and that’s actually the best reason of all.
Despicable Me 3, the third fully animated feature in the Despicable Me franchise was released on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray™, DVD and On Demand – on December 5th. Yep, just in time for Christmas, because a new flick for the family to enjoy is a gift that should be under every tree.
We had already seen it in theatres, yet we were all eager to see it again right after. It was that good! If you’re not famliar, here’s what it’s about: After he is fired from the Anti-Villain League, Gru finds himself in the midst of a major identity crisis. But when a mysterious stranger shows up to inform Gru that he has a long-lost twin brother — a brother who desperately wishes to follow in his twin’s despicable footsteps — the former supervillain rediscovers just how good it feels to be bad.
When we got our Blu-ray copy of Despicable Me 3, my kids had all invited friends over for a sleepover. With my copy was also a wide assortment of themed party favours – so it only goes without saying – we needed to have movie night done right and throw a party to celebrate!
While I pre-planned the decorations, made the cupcakes, and shopped for a few last minute essentials – most of the party set-up was done just before our guests arrived.
My children, upon learning about the movie-night turned movie-party, were all too eager to help me set everything up. They assisted in much of the decorations, no wall wasn’t partied-up.
Since it was a party celebrating the release of watching Despicable Me 3 at home – our party details were themed as such. We had yellow lemonade for a drink, and decorated both the jog and put glow lights underneath for a cool effect.
There was branded decorations along with generic ones in similar colour and themes – and some snacks that went perfectly with the film. The cupcakes had minions on them, which are not at all complicated to make. Just a steady hand and some candy eyeballs.
Because a movie-party at home isn’t complete without popcorn, of course there was some for everyone! The popcorn was partied up with a drizzle of yellow melted chocolate on top with various candies in the bowl as well.
It’s so simple to make, and was such a hit with everyone.
DIY: Minion Popcorn
What you’ll need:
• Popcorn, mini marshmallows, blue candy and eyeball candy
• Pop the popcorn, following the directions on the package.
• Combine all ingredients in a bowl.
In Despicable Me 3 there’s plenty of comedy such as Bratt challenging Gru to a dance fight. The ultimate showdown of fun was brought to our party with an inflatable stereo and disco lights, yoyo balls, glow sticks, some dress-up items, a Rubic’s Cube and more. I don’t even have to tell you how much the kids loved this, I even had to let the party table stay until the next day because they loved playing disco party so much, it carried on again the next morning!
When not eating and dancing, the girls took turns dressing as Gru with scarf, or as a minion with a working headlight touque. Usually, it was a mash of all dress-up items though. And of course the highlight of the party was all the kids settling in after dancing and food – to watch Despicable Me 3 while chewing bubble gum and disco lights still on of course.
If you aren’t familiar with this movie yet, check out the trailer. It’s just a small snippet of the laughs contained. It’s definitely a must-watch film.
One of our little guests asked when she walked in our door to find a party going on, “is it someones birthday? I didn’t know“. When she was told it was an ultimate movie-party to celebrate Despicable Me 3 she said, “really? a party for a movie, with a movie? This is awesome!”.
And really, it was.
Parents, we know how to throw a party, we’ve done it so many times before. Considering the spontaneous fun we had at this non-birthday event – throwing a movie-party won’t be our last. Going to the theatres is a big event, so why shouldn’t movie nights at home be the same? Our movie party was the perfect way to watch Despicable Me 3 at home!
