Mac and Cheese Poutine

When a friend suggested I make Mac and Cheese Poutine when I mentioned that I was challenged to put my #YourCanadianMac spin on mac and cheese, I knew it would be delicious.

I mean, combining two Canadian favourite comfort foods into one heaping mound of deliciousness – really, how could it not? Yet, this was one dish that was so very good it, that it made me pause before taking a second bite.

The flavours are that outstanding. You have the crunch of the fries, the creamy goodness of mac and cheese, savoury gravy and melting cheese curds. Perfection! When I was a kid, my Mom used to take me for poutine as a special treat. It’s a dish that reminds me of her and some of the times we shared together.

Preparing Mac and Cheese Poutine was really easy – while the fries baked in the oven, I cooked the Italpasta macaroni and cheese as per package instructions and prepared the gravy {if you have leftover gravy from a dinner, even better!}.

All three were cooked and ready at the same time, and once combined, I broiled the combination in the oven for a bit to melt the cheese curds. I didn’t expect this recipe to be as easy as it was, nor take such a short time to make.

While photographing the dish, my kids hovered around the table and were ready to pounce the second I was finished. When I gave the go-ahead for them to dive it, it didn’t take long until each last bite was devoured, and requests came in to have it again the next day.

Truthfully, it was the first time I tried Italpasta macaroni and cheese, and why – I’m not so sure.

I have to admit, it’s the tastiest mac and cheese ever – the sharp cheese flavours are as close to ‘homemade’ as could be, without all that extra work of doing so.

My daughter tasted just the Italpasta on it’s own before diving into the Mac and Cheese Poutine and asked why this wasn’t a pantry regular. Well, it is now!

Aside from the wonderful comforting taste of Italpasta macaroni and cheese, it’s good to know that it’s made from 100% Canadian Wheat, real Canadian cheddar, and no artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives. It’s the Canadian choice for mac and cheese, and I might be biased here – but it’s proof that Canadians do it right.

Italpasta is made by Canadians with Canadian ingredients, Italpasta’s Mac and Cheese is the most Canadian mac on the market. It comes in original, extra creamy and white cheddar.

For this recipe I used white cheddar, yet since it was so creamy I had to double-check the box to make sure I wasn’t using the extra creamy variety. Needless to say, if you like extra creamy macaroni and cheese – the Italpasta option in it’s name will blow you away.

  1. oh my gosh! instant craving now. This looks absolutely delish and what a clever idea to mix the combo together. I honestly would never have thought to do that but it makes so much sense adding cheesy mac to fries. Totally trying this

  2. Poutine is one of my favorite foods but I usually don’t like other things added to it because it’s perfect on it’s pwn. However, you seem to have created the ultimate comfort food here and I will definitely be trying it.
