Simple Tips to Prioritize Family Time

In a previous blog post I introduced you to Leon’s #ProjectSmartFurniture experiment, and how this helped one family realize not only the amount of quality time they spend together, but also the importance of making this quality time a priority. If you haven’t already, watch the video and be prepared for a dose of reality.

Through technology and let’s face it, really nice furniture – this social experiment from Leon’s made me really think about my own family and the time that we share together. With the bulk of our time being spent with school, activities and other obligations; it’s sometimes difficult to fit in that quality time together when it seems the schedule is already stretched to its limits. Yet family time is fun, important and completely essential to a happy and healthy family life – so finding ways to prioritize this time together is crucial.

Plus time passes way too quickly, and we always tend to think in the past or future and not the now – but the now is so important. So I’ve been thinking of small ways to sneak in family time with my daughters and re-connect with them in the now, and wanted to share these tips with my readers. The following tips have helped me manage time and chaos better so that I could maximize time spent with my family. I hope they help your family as well!

Tips to Prioritize Quality Family Time

Rearrange the Schedule

Take a look at the things you do on a daily basis, and when time together could be at it’s best – then rearrange that schedule! If that means making lunches the night before so you can spend time together in the morning, so be it. If you find you’re completely little tasks during that optimal family time, find another time of day to complete them instead. Another tip is to make dinners in bulk so that every other you have extra time to spare. Little tricks like this do add up to a lot of time set aside.

Have Family Meals Together

Sometimes the best quality time together is spent over a good meal, when you have everyone’s complete attention. Make meal times re-connect time and have conversations and briefing on everyones lives. Best of all, it’s a time when other distractions {like devices} are minimized, so make this time count!

Involve Family in the Everyday Schedule

I get it, errands and chore simply have to be done and cannot always be brushed aside. So make these tasks a joint effort and complete them together! Cook and clean together, and run errands with each other – I’ve had some of the best conversations with my kids while in the car so take each and every opportunity count.

Go on a Walk

After a long and cold winter, spring is coming and I just can’t wait to get out of the house more. We’ve been taking walks more often as a family, and I just love this time together. Fresh air, some exercise and great conversations – it really clears the mind. Even if you set aside just a small amount of time to do this – I highly suggest it!

Ask Questions

So often you might ask ‘how was school?‘ and get the standard ‘good‘ reply. Yet how often do you dive into more specific questions that involve more detailed answers? It really is the best way to truly connect and get more insight into each others lives. Ensure time spent together isn’t routine and basic, make it a priority to ask and really listen!

As you can see, family time doesn’t have to be long, too thought-out, nor complicated. Family time just needs to be prioritized and a simple part of spending ordinary time. Make the most of the time you have together with your family, live in the now and connect when the opportunity is there.

Project Smart Furniture Leon's - Social experiment to track family time spent together

Leon’s #ProjectSmartFurniture experiment is exactly that – the featured family didn’t spend a great deal of money or travel to the four corners of the earth together. They read, did tasks together, watched a movie together.

So simple yet so important, so think about the basics of life and just make them count.
