Ever since my kids showed an interest in helping me cook, I’ve encouraged their help in the kitchen. Now they love to create meals either on their own, or with little help. Not only does this teach lifelong skills, but it sure does instill a lot of pride and accomplishment. As well, kids are more likely to eat meals that they have a part in creating. They are always eager to enjoy their choices and efforts.

As an added bonus, kids aren’t in that mundane-cooking hole that we easily fall into: making the same meals time and again. I’m constantly amazed at my daughter’s cooking ideas or ways of doing things, which are sometimes obvious but not done because of habit and routine.

For instance, when I cook frozen pizzas, it’s basic and simple – out of the box and cook. Why not add new toppings? Who says the toppings have to be randomly placed? Why always cut the pizza in the traditional fashion?

Make pizza night fun!

The kids and I recently went shopping for Great Value Frozen Pizzas at our local Walmart. With the low price point on Great Value Frozen pizzas, I picked up quite a few. Then we shopped for Great Value toppings to pizzaz up our pizza – shredded cheese, extra sauce, sliced pineapple, and some fresh vegetables.

My kids had a lot of fun with their creations, and while many ideas were tossed around the table, they agreed on a making a rainbow with a sun. It’s been a long winter and I guess I’m not the only one dreaming of a nice spring day.

When it comes to pizza, my kids crinkle their noses at certain toppings such as pineapple and spinach, yet they were so excited to add them into their pizza design – proving that kids will eat what they choose {colour me impressed}.

After cooking, they decided the pizza needed to be cut into long stick-like pieces, so that each piece literally had every bit of the rainbow. Great idea! Our pizza party was an enjoyable experience, from shopping to creating and especially enjoying while sharing stories of our day. The flavours were amazing, the quality of the Great Value frozen pizzas and toppings chosen by my kids ended in a tasty (and affordable) dinner!

Really cute ideas! 🙂 I think this is the exception to the rule of “dont play with your food” 😉
