Cheesy Rainbow Rice with Ground Beef – An Easy Recipe Kids Can Make

All three of my daughters have great interest in cooking and baking, and have for many years now. It started with watching me in the kitchen and progressed to them helping with simple tasks, to them wanting instruction on how to cook themselves.

Just as important as learning to read and write, kids want and need to be able to cook as well. It’s skills learned that will follow them through all their years, plus help them create healthier eating habits.

Uncle Ben’s has had a wonderful Ben’s Beginners program, to help kids master their abilities and get them excited about cooking. With #LookWhatWeMade, it builds off of kids’ innate interest in creating, and encourages them to get into the kitchen through a new national contest.

Through the digital hub at Ben’s Beginners, Canadian families can participate in activities that will help teach cooking skills to their children, and then use those skills to prepare a mouth-watering recipe. By uploading a photo afterward, they’ll be entered for a chance to win one of three $10,000 RESPs.

Of course my kids are all over the easy recipes kids can make found on the Ben’s Beginners website, and have really taken an interest in watching and learning from the great BEN’S Beginners Cooking Lessons which facilitate each recipe.

Working as a team, my kids recently made Cheesy Rainbow Rice with Ground Beef – a simple one-skillet meal that uses ingredients you already have at home.

The twins helped chop veggies and my oldest took to the cooking on the stove. This particular recipe has a kids cooking lesson on how to chop veggies, keeping safety and education in mind.

There’s an interactive ‘how to’ on the site that allows them to practice digitally before chopping the real deal. The twins are at that perfect age to learn this task, and have been eager to do this ever since.

Step by step the cooking lesson for the Cheesy Rainbow Rice with Ground Beef recipe shows kids how to complete each step in the instructions, providing valuable and helpful tips along the way. Once the lessons are completed, kids earn a badge for each one, encouraging them to try the other recipes and thus, learning to cook even more easy dishes!

After each recipe lesson, there’s also the reminder to enter chance to win 1 of 3 prizes of $10,000 in RESPs, simply by uploading a photo that shows you and your child with the rice-based dish you cooked together. Believe me, the kids are so proud after cooking by themselves, they’ll want to take that photo to commemorate!

With a prep time of 5 minutes and a cook time of 10 {20 if you count the oven baking}, dinner was on the table in no time. It was so delicious too, the kids all ate seconds!

October 15th is the first annual International Cook with Your Kids Day, and Uncle Ben’s wants to inspire kitchen confidence in parents across Canada to learn with and teach their kids. Since less than half of Canadian parents feel highly skilled at creating a balanced meal and most common kitchen tasks, like seasoning, chopping, and pan frying – it’s time to change that statistic, by teaching our kids.

Share your experience cooking together in the kitchen using #LookWhatWeMade and benefit from life skills education, confidence building, and possibly winning RESP’s in the meantime!
