Most of us we take care of our skin much better during the summer months than during the wintertime. On colder days we stay bundled up and hidden indoors, and our skincare regimes fall to the wayside. We most notice the results of this neglect when a time comes in which we rely on healthy skin – like special occasions or holidays. For instance, I had to heavily focus on skincare TLC in preparation for our recent trip to Mexico, my dry Canadian skin wasn’t invited to come!
Cold air and harsh winds can quickly dry out the skin and make it very dull-looking, which might cause itchiness to discomfort depending on the severity of the dryness. Trying to turn back the clock and re-hydrate is such a tedious process, and it can be avoided with keeping up on a skincare routine even in the winter months. To feel better in your own skin, it’s not too late to put yourself first and focus on skincare.
10 Winter Skincare Tips for Beautiful Skin Through the Winter Months
Exfoliate – Dry skin, be gone! two to three days a week, work on exfoliating your dry skin, most conveniently done in the shower with a loofah. Don’t forget the lips, which take a beating during the winter months. I suggest exfoliating the lip using a toothbrush, gently removing dead skin. Afterward, use a nourishing lip balm to lock in moisture.
Sunscreen – Even though you aren’t laying out in the sun in flip-flops, SPF sunscreens should still remain a critical part of your routine in the winter months. In fact, the glare of the sun off snow is skin-damaging! Your skincare routine must include protecting it from harsh rays. I like to apply a tinted moisturiser with SPF daily.
Drink water – Hydration and health starts from the inside, and your skin definitely shows inside health. While the colder weather tries to convince us to replace water for hot chocolate, drink that water – your body and skin will thank you! 8 glasses is always recommended!
Exercise – It’s truth that regular exercise improves circulation and and thus gives your skin more colour and a beautiful glow. I know it’s hard to work up to a winter workout, yet for it’s importance, it’s worthy to discover your motivation to get moving.
Layer up – As much as possible, protect your skin from the cold winter wind, to prevent additional dryness or even windburn. I’m guilty of running out the door without gloves, so I keep a pair in my car to use when going in and out of stores, it helps!
Evening pampering – The best time of day to do a little much-needed self pampering is after the kids have gone to bed and winding down has begun. Make an evening ritual to moisturize, beautify and treat yourself to some TLC.
Avoid long hot showers – Always keep in mind that long hot showers strip the skin from moisture. Either keep the water a lukewarm temperature or limit your time in the shower.
Befriend the humidifier – The winter months bring dry air, yet it’s even worse thanks to furnace heat. Use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air, even running it at night so that your skin can replenish while you sleep.
Moisturize Body and Face – Cold winter conditions strip skin of its natural moisture, and skincare routines are top importance. I’m talking about the entire body and especially the hands. Between the winter chill, and washing them constantly – hands really do suffer when it comes to dryness! I live by the rule that hand cream is everywhere, conveniently placed by the sinks, my office, my nightstand, purse and the car!
Arm Yourself – My winter skincare regime includes arming myself with great products that help me get the job done. For my recent trip to Mexico, my favourite hand creams, lotions and body washes were part of my ritual for healthy winter skin. Another great product is Schick Hydro Silk razor and Skintimate shave gel – both necessities in achieving that soft touchable skin, especially when they both work to check many points on my entire list!
The Schick Hydro Silk razor has 5 curve-sensing blades with skin guards, to help to protect the skin from irritation, plus the water-activated moisturizing serum hydrates long after shaving. The Schick Hydro Silk razor leaves my skin feeling silky smooth. The Skintimate shave gel helps me track areas missed, but also leaves the skin with a great scent. Multi-tasking and pampering me-time at it’s best!
