Years ago when I was a child {actually it feels like a lifetime ago}, I got one terrible cold that kept me home from school and away from my usual kid-schedule. It struck at the most inopportune time too, as it often does. It was during our annual school Christmas concert, and one which I was pretty honoured to have special roles. In the concert, I was one of the few to have a lengthy speaking part and announce the refreshment and dessert finale to the audience.
You can just imagine how crushed I was to learn that I was to miss the concert and not be able to partake in an event that I’d rehearsed for weeks, and looked forward to for even longer. In between sneezing and coughing, I remember crying – so sad that I felt so miserable instead of the expected joy.
During this time my Mom did what Mothers do and tried her best to nurse me back to health. She fetched my favourite teddy bears to cuddle, and brought cups of warm chicken soup to my designated home set up on the couch. Yet, it was her creative and loving mission to lift my spirit that still warms my heart to this day.
To ease the pain of missing out due to illness, she called upon some family members to arrive at our house, dressed in their best concert attire. She arranged seating in the living room facing the couch to resemble an auditorium and stage. She handed over my toy microphone and I spoke my well-rehearsed dialogue to my audience. She then nudged me to finish my last duty and announce the finale, which I did next.
My sick kid-self, my Mom and other family members then went into the kitchen where she had fresh baked cookies and mugs of hot chocolate with whip cream and sprinkles.
I’m pretty sure I would have never remembered this particular bout of sickness, like so many others which don’t house my mind, if not for the special lengths she took to make her daughter feel better inside and out. My sadness was wholeheartedly replaced by smiles and laughter that evening, and it was all thanks to my Mom.
I remember this time in my life often, especially when caring for my own children when they are sick. I keep in mind that small moments can make lasting ones, and seize the opportunity to give that special care when they need it most.
TYLENOL® UR has created a Like Mom Does program to thank moms for taking care of us over the years when we’ve been sick. They are asking Canadians to reflect on Mom’s care during their sick moments. It’s a chance to reflect and show appreciation for your Mom, and to celebrate all that she did and/or does.
Check out this hero video where you can create a “shoutout” thanking your mom for something special she used to do {or would do}, when you were sick.
You can then share your shout-out to your network and with your Mom. As well, follow the #LikeMomDoes hashtag to warm your heart with stories from others.
For effective care of your cold, cough & flu symptoms, you want symptom relief you can trust so that you can GET BACK TO NORMAL, WHATEVER YOUR NORMAL IS® with Tylenol Complete.

I still feel like I am the kid and my mom knows what to do. I call her when my son is sick, because she knows more than I do (or so I feel she does). Mom’s are the best!

There’s nothing like mom when you’re sick. Even as an adult, my mom is still always there. I was really sick with my first pregnancy and when my boyfriend was 3 hours away on business, my mom swooped in and took me to the hospital so they could get fluids in me.
Jennifer says
You mom sounds like an amazing woman. I think moms are one of the most important parts of anyone’s life.

I don’t think we realize all the things our Mom has done for us until we become a parent. It is important to thank our Moms for all the hard work they have done.

Awe, your story brought back so many memories of my mom taking care of me when I was sick. I don’t know how but she had this way to gently massage my back, that always made me feel better. Now that I am a mom, I work had to provide the same love for my kids.

Great photo – I see that you had the famous couch! We had it too (who didn’t?!). I didn’t get the impression that you were old enough to possess great retro photos, haha.
My mom was a nurse, so caregiving has always been second nature for her too.
