Back to School Shopping with

This time in the year comes with a lot of ‘new stuff’. From supplies to backpacks, clothes to footwear – there’s plenty of shopping to be done! In fact, I think this time of year comes with with the Christmas season when it comes to spending. That is, when you factor in activity fees, school fees and all the extra expenses that come up.

The best advice I can give, since most purchases are unavoidable, is to save where you can. It really does add up!

This is where has saved me {literally} in the past, and especially during this back to school shopping season. If you aren’t yet familiar, is a digital offers site that compiles the best in-store and online deals for some of your favourite retailers.

Back to School Shopping saving RetailMeNot canada

Relatively new to Canada, aims to help every Canadian develop savvy spending habits on everything from clothes to more practical purchases like savings on school supplies! My suggestion is to have the app right there on your main page and check often. As in, before you buy anything.

Before I started my back to school shopping, I checked so I knew I was getting the best price I could, before I purchased. In fact, I knew I wanted to get some clothing items from the twins at The Children’s Place, they have some adorable new items right now.

Thanks to an alert from, I took advantage of a 50% off + Free Shopping Promotion at The Children’s Place.

Not only did I get some great clothing items for the twins, to start the new school year {hello, all things animal print!}, yet I also scored a few Halloween shirts for the girls as well. I always get them fun Halloween t-shirts each year, yet hate scrambling last minute since that means slim pickings. I got 3 great ones for an incredible price and one is even glow in the dark!

Back to School Shopping RetailMeNot canada

My cart at The Children’s Place would have costed $180.50 yet thanks to I only spent $94.74. That’s a deal for 3 leggings, 3 shirts, 1 skirt, 1 dress, 1 headband and 1 novelty lip balm. That’s 5 outfits for just over $90. Plus, I earned $45 in Place cash to use on a future purchase!

Making back to school shopping easier on the pocketbook, is there. Don’t forget to check the site when celebrating back to school with a lunch out with friends – there’s even restaurant offers at too. Cheers to school season … and saving!

To get you started, here are some Savvy Spending Tips from Sandra Hanna, Smart Cookie and spokesperson

Hold Off On Trendier Gear

34% of Canadian parents feel the pressure to purchase trendy items to help their child fit in at school. The problem is, trends come and go – and often very quickly! Kids may love a certain lunch box or pencil case they find in August, but once school starts and they see that their friends are all using another kind they’ll beg you to upgrade. Hold off on the more trendy purchases until school starts rather than spending double… it will pay to wait!

Cheapest Isn’t Always Best

When it comes to items your kids will use all year round, like backpacks, it pays to invest in quality. Think about price for longevity and factor that into your cost comparison. However, don’t forget that you can still find a great deal on a high quality backpack for about $40, especially if you stack your savings. Doing a quick search on sites like will help you find promo codes for some of your favourite retailers and brands, saving you a few dollars on that backpack.

Go For Reusable Lunch Supplies

Don’t waste money on plastic utensils and paper napkins that get thrown out after only one use. If you throw away bags and bottles, you’re basically throwing your money in the garbage. Instead, use cloth napkins, real flatware and reusable containers for food and snacks. It’s a small investment, but they last forever.

Deals Aren’t Just For the Kids

Despite 43% Canadians feeling back-to-school can be a financial burden, the shopping season can also bring a ton of sales! While you’re stocking your kids up for the school year, don’t forget to take advantage of the lowest prices of the year on computers and other office equipment. If you’re in the market, now is the time to save on that new laptop you’ve been eyeing from top retailers like Best Buy.

Share Your Shopping

44% of Canadian parents agree back-to-school shopping is stressful, so why not share the stress and costs? You can save money by buying school supplies in bulk especially if you split the cost with another parent. Compare shopping lists with friends and neighbours to see what you both need. By buying in bulk at stores like Costco and splitting the cost, you can save money for the more expensive items.
