Holidays – It’s all about the Prep!

Christmas is just a few weeks away and you can most certainly feel it in the air. Are you feeling just a tad bit overwhelmed? There’s much to do this time of year, and with it comes a lot of stress. After all, you have holiday cards to send, gifts to buy, decorating to do – and that’s just the beginning.

What is the secret to tackling the holidays like a pro? It’s all in the prep!

Think of it this way: Before everyone opens presents, you have to tackle actually getting, and wrapping, those gifts you’re going to give. Before you serve dinner, there’s the planning of the meal and the grocery shopping. You must think about all the fine details that go into every event, and plan accordingly. Formulating a careful plan can really cut down on the holiday stress.

Hosting a family dinner? Do you have enough dinner plates and cutlery for everyone? Look at the menu you’ve planned, and take a peek around your kitchen to make sure you have enough cookware to make that meal. If you’re going to need another serving dish, saucepan, or gravy boat, you’ll want to know before the big day arrives.

Unexpected guests! We all know the panic behind the warm, welcoming smile that appears when you are greeted with unexpected company at the door. Shop now for a variety of beverages and frozen appetizers to offer, so that you have them on hand for when that doorbell rings.

I’ve made my lists, checked them twice and am adding to them daily – to prep our family and myself for the holidays. We’re hosting Christmas dinner this year – a first for us – so you can bet there’s much to do, buy, and prepare for.

I recently went to Target and spotted a few key items that’ll help me with the holidays this year.

They have such a wide range of KitchenAid products, and their hand mixer immediately caught my eye. It wasn’t until I spotted this pretty pink sidekick that I remembered that my current mixer is starting to emit a burning smell when used. (As it was one of the first items my husband and I bought when we got our first house 15 years ago, this isn’t a big surprise.)

As I stood in Target and looked at the hand mixer, I thought of my holiday guests crinkling their noses at the burning smell coming from the kitchen, while I prepared those mashed potatoes … and into the cart that KitchenAid Hand Mixer went! Much embarrassment avoided!

The Keurig 2.0, also available at Target, is tops on my ‘prepping for the holidays’ list. While I love my current Keurig single-serve coffee maker, making so many single cups isn’t the best approach when you have a houseful of people.

When company has arrived in the past (during the holidays or at any other time of the year), I’ve had to bring out the old large brewer from storage. Then I had to clean it before making coffee for my guests (please entertain yourself while I clean my appliances. Ugh), and then also had to deal with having 2 machines taking up space on my counter.

Making a whole carafe with the Keurig 2.0. is more cost-effective that making many single individual cups, and I’ll also have a hot beverage the second someone needs some, without having to hunt in the basement for a brewer. Yet, the thing I love most about the Keurig 2.0 is that it also makes my beloved single serve cups, so I can use this one machine for both functions, whenever the need arises. Dual purpose!

The moral of my own shopping trip to Target is this: it’s all in the prep.

Today I challenge you to go through your usual day, and with everything you reach for and do, ask yourself if this would work, if there were guests at your house right now. A few essentials purchased today will make your holidays that much easier and less stressful, I guarantee!

At Target, it’s our belief that great design is fun, energetic, surprising and smart—and it should be accessible and affordable for everyone. When we talk about our dedication to design, we don’t just mean how something looks, but also how it satisfies a need, simplifies your life, and makes you feel. Target. Expect More. Pay Less.
