Summer Fever

The twins finished Kindergarten last week, and I got the first sweet taste of summer holidays. That first twinge of summer fever struck, with the windows open and the scent of cut grass wafting into the house.

Energy hit – hard! I started cleaning house, throwing away/packing up end of school paperwork that came home and going through closets and cupboards. You might not notice the organized chaos at a glance, yet it’s there. For now.

Isabelle finished Grade 4 yesterday and summer holidays officially began! As I drove away from the school, the biggest smile spread across my face. Freedom! We went to the movies, had popcorn and chocolate for dinner and stayed up way too late.

Reflecting on the last 10 months, here’s what I won’t miss:

  • packing lunches
  • signing agendas and forms
  • alarm clocks
  • the rush to get out the door to school and activities
  • going back and forth from the school, 3 times a day
  • doing the girls hair. it’s overrated and same goes with my own
  • setting out outfits, wear what you want now – I don’t care!
  • cold unforgotten coffee, I’m actually finishing a cup now!
  • the clutter of backpacks and school-crap, it’s already washed and packed away
  • sticking to a schedule, meh, it’s whatever goes now!

Here I am, enjoy a plethora of everything right now. My head is swirling with the promise of the next 2 months. Typing away, with a cup of coffee and in my pyjamas. Life is good.

I’m not even sure the girls are dressed right now or if they’ve brushed their teeth yet. Honestly, I can’t be bothered to even ask. Right now I’m enjoying the moment. It’s summer. IT’S SUMMER!

What won’t you miss about the school year?

  6. Oh my Goodness! I can sooo relate to your list. I won’t miss the alarm – that’s for sure! My kids are both driving now and I am very happy I’m not driving to school anymore – yay! Believe it or not, my daughter still likes me to curl her hair even though she does a better job than I do. When summer is over, I’m sure I’ll be curling it once again. I don’t mind though. Now I treasure the time, because I know she’ll be away at college next year. Happy Sunday! 🙂

  7. I love when the “summer” spirit actually hits me too. Our house becomes a live in the summer because most everyone loves to drive out to visit since we are close to the lake. I love it!

  8. During the summer I am super laidback. Eat cereal for supper if you want, or drink caffeine at 6 PM. It’s all good! We go back the first week of August and I’m enjoying life NOW.

  9. Pack the kids school stuff away, pull out the lawn sprinkler, sit in a lawn chair and watch them have fun

  10. Well, since I am a full time teacher I just can’t even begin to tell you what the summer means me to! No more grading papers until 10 o’clock at night, no more getting up early to be at work by 7:30, no more parent/teacher conferences, no more being dead tired when I walk in the door at 6:00……..the list goes on and on!! Right now I am savoring every minute of sleeping in, no schedule, going to the beach, staying in my pj’s until noon and like you, enjoying every last drop of my coffee!!! Have a great summer!!

  11. We are spending lots of time at the splash pad and staying outside as much as possible! So happy summer is finally here!!

  12. Next June will be our first Summer vacay from school as the LO is only starting this year. We usually start off our Summer with a visit to the Bio Park, Canada Day celebrations and family fun at the carnival ☺

  13. The one thing I will not miss….having to wake a grumpy teen every morning! I swear that is torture.
    Every. Single. Day.
But I wish I could sleep in “like a teen on summer vacation” just once.

  14. I don’t have kids that are of school age but I sure won’ t miss hearing the buses driving by each morning. They sure do travel and shake the house every time. Then when I am out at the mall or somewhere, hate having to stop all the time behind or in front of the bus when they are picking up and letting off kids. I know its for their safety but it can be a pain when you are in a hurry.
