Dropcam: Video Monitoring Camera

Just released into Canada is Dropcam, an easy-to-use home video monitoring camera. I was lucky to be one of the first in the country to be sent Dropcam for review, and I have to say, I’m pretty blown away.

Dropcam set-up was so super simple, you can choose to wall mount or have Dropcam sit on it’s own {wall mount accessories are included in the package}.

Simply connect Dropcam to your PC or laptop using the included USB cable, and and it connects to your wifi. Then, you are able to drop in and view what it captures, on your computer and even your phone via an app.

Just think of the possibilities for use in the home!

Check in on kids playing in the other room, mischievous pets at home alone and even your yard! While I joked with a friend who occasionally babysits that I’ll be able to see they are up to {joking M!}, she loved the idea of checking in on her dog who’s home alone all day while she’s at work.

I know another dog owner that could use it to tell her dog to quit barking since apparently it’s a big issue with the neighbours while she’s at work. So many times she’s said to me in frustration, “How can I tell him to stop? I’m at work!!”.

Tell him? I better explain that one.

One of the many impressive features of Dropcam is that it has two-way talk, so you can literally talk through Dropcam. When I first set up our Dropcam, I placed it in the living room and went into the office to view. The twins were playing on the rug and started to fight with each other, so with a push of the button I could remind them to play nicely.

Deer in headlights, “She can see us!!!”. It was really awesome. Plus, I now have sad video proof that laundry doesn’t put itself away.

Since then I’ve placed Dropcam on the kitchen window sill so that I could see the back deck. For years hubby and I have wondered whether it was birds or a cat that is always getting into our garbage every week. Now, we’ll find out! Yes!

Then, I plan on moving it to the front window, you never know when someone might try and break into the vehicles sitting outside.

Added benefits of Dropcam is that you can share the clips with family and friends, so that they can view too. Perhaps you’ll catch a tender an unexpected moment between siblings.

Other fab features is that you can also schedule the camera to go on and off at preferred times, and get notifications such as when it detects movement or sound.

Dropcam comes in HD and Pro, the differences shown in the photo below. The price of Dropcam is $159.99 and $220 respectively.

dropcam pro features review

Viewing live is free with Dropcam yet you can also subscribe for Cloud Video Recording for 7 day recordings {at $9.96/month} and 30 day recording for {$29.95/month} though it’s cheaper if you get the annual plan and if you have more than one Dropcam.

I like and recommend the option of Cloud Video Recording, since I think people would want to not only view live but also be able to go back and see things that have already happened. Like those pesky animals in the garbage or who took that last cookie from the pantry! Plus when recording, there’s a graph displayed kind of like and ECG, and you can easily spot times when there was movement and sound and skip back to view it instantly.

For those concerned about safety/wifi of this product, rest assured as Dropcam uses bank-level security to ensure that your live and stored videos are safe, even on open wireless networks. Your video is encrypted on the camera before it is transmitted to the cloud and streamed securely to your devices using SSL encryption. By default all video is private and you control sharing rights.

Available right now at Amazon.ca, watch for the release of Dropcam on October 22 at Apple stores and Best Buy stores all across Canada. It’s coming, Canada, and it’s so worth checking out!

Disclosure: I was provided with product to facilitate this review post, opinions are my own.

  9. I love the features on the Dropcam Pro. 8x zoom, amazing. And the 130 degree field of vision is great too. Even in low light. Looks amazing. And I would use it to see the dog walkers who do not pick up!!! They claim they do, but you just know they don’t because you never see them with a bag!

  10. I like that you can receive alerts for motion and sound on your smartphone or other device

  11. I think that because I can view even from my phone is amazing. I would put it facing the car park. There have been a few issues over the years and it would be nice to put a stop to it.

In response to your requirement to Visit Dropcam and tell you my favourite feature of their product!
My favourite feature is the Night Vision.
Thank you for having this giveaway!!!!!!!!!!

  18. I like the night vision. I would place at the window so I can see out in the night for security reasons.

  19. I really like the DropCam’s Two-Way Talk function and that its Cloud-based with Wi-Fi. This would be awesome to keep an eye on my niece and nephews.

    1. sorry – those may not technically be features – i also like that it has enhanced two-way talk

  20. I love that there is cloud video recording. That would be great for if you are trying to “catch” something specific.

  21. I love that you can get alerts and stuff to your phone. Good way to heck on the house when you are not home.

  22. I love that the drop cam can detect movement, and that you can save the recordings! This week when my in-laws were visiting, some vandals came by our new house and slashed one of my tires as well as the parents. If I had this, we could have filmed the little buggers and taken it to the police, instead of being stuck with a $170 and likely $300 bill for new tires…

  23. There is so much to like! First I love that it goes to your phone or laptop so I wont lose a signal on my baby monitor. Or if Im leaving the house I can have it set up elsewhere and still check in on my phone. I also love how I can schedule it to go on and off. Everything about this is amazing! I would love to win one!

  24. I love that I can talk through it. I love that it can be hooked up to my wi-f.i so I will never lose a signal. Also I can put it in my daughters room and record the funny things she does and put it online!

  25. I love the small easy install with secured WIFI! I have been waiting for one of these so I can watch my little ones while they play downstairs and I am cooking or something on the main floor!! AWESOME product

  26. I know that a few sites have been mentioning the dropcam coming to Canada but just so you all know the cloud service is NOT available in Canada unless you purchase with an American Credit card. When I asked when it would be available to purchase in Canada with a Canadian credit card I was told that Canada is not supported. So this is a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

  27. I love its ability to record continuous footage over a 30 day period. It means I won’t have to miss anything that might be important. I also like that the video appears to be fairly clear footage that is in colour. A lot of security footage seems to be either of a low, blurry quality or in black and white.

  28. I like the fact that it can be controlled remotely. Always wondered what my dog does when we’re not home 🙂

  29. I like the fact that it has a timer, so u can set it for specific times during the day.

  30. I like the fact that it notifies you of a movement or sound, so you don’t have to sit glued to the screen (unless you want to)

  31. I like the fact that you can watch video live via iOS, Android and web apps anytime, anywhere.

  32. I love the night vision feature. We live in a medium to high crime rate area and this would be nice to watch our front of the house.

  33. I like that it has two – way talk and night vision… Being able to watch the video later is nice too!

  34. being about to talk to bug from the other room and reasurring her back to sleep without having to go in over and over again.

  35. This would be great for our big boy who is moving to his new downstairs bedroom soon, to know what is happening in the middle of the night!

  36. This camera is incredible, for how clear the picture is… you could be standing in the room yourself. I have so many scenarios I could use this for! Mainly bc we have one kid that stays home frequently I could watch what she was getting up to while we are at work from our phones.

  37. I love the fact that it has the two-way talk feature. That would get a lot of use at our house 🙂

  38. One of the features I really like is the fact that you can share the clips with family and friends, so that they can view too.

  39. Being not so healthy and “older” this would be great for security reasons for us. AND we could keep an eye on our cat when not home!

  40. This camera has so many wonderful features. The two way talk 130 degree view are two of my favourites

  41. I love how you can share with friends and family but at the same time know that it is secure 🙂

  42. I love the idea of scheduling the camera to go on and off and view it from your phone.

  43. Honestly! The two-way talk is one of the best features. I’d like to see how my dog would react to my voice if I’m not there.

  44. Apart from just being able to have ‘a pair of digital eyes’ trained on areas of concern, I like that there’s bank-level security for the Wi-Fi transmission.

  45. I like that it has 2-Way Talk, perfect for everyday situations or even if you have elderly parents living on their own etc.

  46. I love the two way talk and the fact that you can connect it to most devices. This is a great camera!

  47. Love that Dropcam uses bank level security to ensure your stored videos are safe. thanks!

  48. The two way talk blows my mind… I so want to mess with the kitties.

  49. My favorite is the two way talk. I think that is such a innovative and useful feature on a camera like this.

  50. Love that you can view live but also go back and see prior happenings. What a great product!

  51. Question. Im due to have twins and want to get this camera. With the view do you think i can get a way with just one to see in both cribs?
