VTech InnoTab 3 and the Innotab 3s

My girls are at that age where they love handheld gaming devices. Yet, as a parent who wants to always get the biggest bang for the buck, I urge them to use these devices for educational purposes, during the majority of the use. I’m happy that they love playing learning games on their devices, every bit helps when it comes to learning something new or to fine-tune abilities.

I was given the opportunity to review both the Innotab 3 and the Innotab 3s from VTech. We didn’t have either of these devices, yet I know the girls had wanted them. Plus, it was a great chance to compare the two models and see the additions to the 2nd generation Innotab.

The first thing I did for each was install Learning Lodge on my computer, update each system, connect the devices to Learning Lodge and download some apps for the girls. While there are the typical games, there are so many learning apps to choose from. One for all ages, there was ones specifically for counting, the alphabet, math and so on. The girls and I recommend the Grade School apps.

I loved that I could buy an app and then download it onto each device. I love this feature since before we always used cartridges and the girls took turns. This way, they could both play the same game, at the same time. Yet, for those that love having actual cartridges for handheld devices, you have that choice as well.

My girls settled into each game and started the exploration. Right away they found the camera on each, which rotates 180Β°. I don’t think there’s one inch of this house they didn’t take a photo of and have with, using all 55 fun photo effects. Ahhh, girls after my own photobug heart!

Overall, the buttons on each are a great size for little fingers, the entire device fits nicely in the hand with no complaints. Made to stand up to even the roughest kids and accidents, each also has a really tough exterior.

Each device has compartments for the batteries, and the InnoTab 3 comes with batteries. A great step up for the Innotab 3s is that it has a rechargeable battery pack with an AC adaptor for charging. This saves a lot of battery purchasing!

While they both have the same apps and can play videos and even MP3 songs {both have 32gb of memory}, there is one major difference as I see it. The Innotab 3s connects to Wifi. This means that using the device, parents and kids can send messages to each other.

While connected to wifi, my oldest was able to read and learn about animals and more. This would have come in handy during her animal studies last year in school. Yet we all know that researching topics as this will always come up in school. Also, she just has a natural curiosity for things like this, so it really expands on what an educational device can do.

I know, you’re thinking: she can look this up online. Yet, we’re not always at home. Or, I don’t always want to hand over my phone {truth}. And, if she wants to read up on National Geographic Kids on a plane and then later play a math game – why not? It’s just more choices and that’s a great thing.

The Innotab 3s is about $20 more in price than the Innotab 3. There are some additional features in the newest model, yet I see them both as being great for kids. Choosing which one to buy depends on what you want from an educational device.
