Last year we did a lot of room switching in our home. Two bedrooms and an office were moved to make all spaces more functional for our family. After all was said and done, the twins got new bedroom furniture and bedding, my office got a massive {and awesome} re-vamp and my oldest daughter got a new bed and desk.
The only thing not crossed off the list was a new bedding set for my oldest, Isabelle. While hers worked for the longest time, she didn’t much care for all her mismatched bedding. She was using pillowcases from a few previous sets {one being her crib set!}, and various comforters from past years as well. Her bedding and accessories were next on our ‘to-do for the home’ list.
Walmart Canada asked me if I wanted to participate in the Walmart Frugal Heroes Challenge on Thursday Aug 22nd. The goal was to tackle that must-buy list for back to school whether it be clothes, school supplies, a bedroom update, office accessories etc – yet it must be done as frugally as possible.
BINGO! This was the opportunity for Isabelle to get a new look in her room.
So on this day, myself and many bloggers across Canada took on the #WalmartFrugalHeroes mission. I went to Walmart in the search of finding the best {back to school} bang for the buck.
Knowing that Isabelle wanted to transition her room to the colours of purple and lime green, I scored a great deal on a new comforter for just $15 in the bedding clearance rack. This Queen sized comforter is also really thick and fluffy, great quality!
The brand Mainstays {sold at Walmart Canada} has many colours for pillowcases and sheet sets, of which I dropped one of each into the cart. I loved that I found complimentary colours to the comforter. So, I now also had the fitted sheet, flat sheet and 3 pillow cases {2 in a package plus one that came with the sheet set}.
Next was accessories! I found a soft and trendy shag loop rug {on sale at $17.88}, in that same green colour of the comforter. It’s so soft and eye-catching, I could not resist.
Notice all the bright hues? These vibrant highlighter-like colours are HOT again right now {should have kept my own gear from the 80s!}. There’s also a nice selection in natural shades as well, yet for tweens and teens – a bold colour is where it’s at.
I found some lamps on sale at $19.00, and the purple colour totally matched the comforter as well. Score! Isabelle reads a lot at night, and will be even more when school starts. This lamp was a must-buy. As well, she was outgrowing her Hello Kitty lamp and needed something for her {*sniff, sniff*} big girl room.
I also got a few Blue Whale Pillows {$3.33 each}, since everyone in our house loves many pillows on their bed. While I was at it, I decided it was time to replace her pillows as well.
As soon as I got home, I rushed to get her room set up as a surprise for when she got home from Cheerleading. With the *help* of the twins, I had everything ready and waiting in minutes {*they just kept jumping on the bed}.
When Isabelle got home, this was her reaction:
To this:
Isabelle LOVED LOVED this room makeover. She adores the colours and all the accessories to match. She had to inspect every inch of the materials, nodding in approval with the hugest smile ever. There was also more bed-jumping fury here as well, she was a *tad* bit excited over her surprise.
The school year deserves to start with good nights sleep, it’s crucial for kid to grow and learn. My daughter claims to have the best sleep ever surrounded in her new thread-count.
With tax, this room makeover cost $100.60, a frugal price to change up bedding and accessories in a bedroom {though I’m keeping my eyes peeled for a green decorative pillow to complete the look}. I had so much fun taking part in the Walmart Frugal Heroes Challenge, and surprising my daughter with a new styled room.
With such great selection and prices, Walmart came out the hero for this frugalista. Yet, with the hugs and love that I got when my daughter saw her new space, I was the hero as well. Thanks Walmart!
Disclosure: I was provided with a Walmart Gift Card for my participation in this challenge. As always, all opinions are my own.
