Putting on my ‘reminiscing hat …
It was 2007 and Isabelle was super adorable at 3 years old. A ‘live on stage’ cross Canada tour was announced with a stop in my city, for a character she was crazy about. So, I sighed and purchased us tickets to go.
As the date drew closer, I was honestly very ‘meh’ about it. Did I really want to sit in a crowded theatre with hundreds of toddlers, for a couple of hours? Not really. But for her, I would suck it up, slap on a grin and try not to pout too much about it.
The morning of the event, the flu hit and Isabelle was so incredibly sick. We had no choice but to give the tickets away, so I arranged to meet a friend of a friend at the venue just before showtime. I parked at the front doors and handed over the tickets, yet I didn’t get back in the car and go on my merry way.
I gazed at the scene before me as flocks of kids were skipping, jumping, cheering and laughing as they made their way to the doors. All of them were so very thrilled to be going to the show that night.
My heart swelled instantly at all the smiles and happiness – and then the tears came down.
I felt the guilt of dreading this night for weeks. I felt intense sadness that my daughter missed the chance to see live, what she adored for so long on TV. She wasn’t going to be clapping, dancing and in ‘awe’ like she should have that night.
Things happen like illness and there’s nothing we can do about it. But me? I could have had a better attitude about it. Mommy guilt hit me as hard as the flu hit her. I still remember that feeling and promised that I’d embrace and support my kids’ interests from that moment on …
