Thanks to ShesConnected and Toshiba Canada, I was selected as a Toshiba Brand Ambassador. My holiday duty? To choose a Toshiba product perfect for holiday gifting and learn more about it, thus sharing that information with you! I chose to feature the Toshiba Passive 3D TL515 Series, since 3D TV’s are so coveted right now and I think they are here to stay.
Armed with a list of local retailers, I didn’t have any luck with the first two stores I visited. Sears didn’t have any at all and Best Buy didn’t have a demo model on the floor. I did have some luck at Visions though, 3rd time was a charm!
The salesman that helped me at Visions was very knowledgable about the Toshiba Passive 3D TV, even great at offering comparing information on other brand.s This is great since customers need to make educated purchases.
Here’s a little pre-info:
- Same RealD™ 3D technology used in cinemas around the world.
- Four pairs of Passive (Natural) 3D glasses
- Passive (Natural) 3D is optimal for prolonged viewing and is ideally suited for gamers.
- TriVector™ 2D to 3D Conversion means you can enjoy all your favourite 2D TV programming, video games, Blu-ray Discs and home movies in full 3D.
- 3D Resolution+™ – This technology upconverts and sharpens 3D content not already in HD for richer and higher quality 3D images.
- built-in Wi-Fi® capability
- USB Input (JPEG/MP3/Video)
- Energy Star®
My daughters were especially enthralled with the TV, it was cute seeing them all in a row with glasses on {and mouths open in awe}. Just drag over a leather armchair and a bag of popcorn and I’m sure they would have stayed put for hours! Yet, this entertaining gave me a chance to talk with the salesman and learn more.
One thing that I was surprised to learn was that you don’t have to watch everything in 3D, the TriVector technology allows you to choose from 3D or 2D viewing. So, when you don’t want to have images pop out at you, you don’t have to. Plus, you don’t ‘need’ to get special 3D movies either – all regular movies will convert to 3D! OK, don’t give me that ‘you didn’t know that?’ look, I really didn’t. And, I know I’m not alone as this was a conversation once with some friends and myself. We just assumed that you couldn’t watch it without the glasses. Turns out, you don’t!
The salesperson also said that many are attracted to the metal strip that frames the outer perimeter of the TV. Aesthetics and not functional, he said that many compliment the TV on this alone, for that added touch of design.
The Toshiba Passive 3D TV has a high-quality, clear picture and good contrast and detail, even when at an angle. And the passive feature allows for more comfortable viewing, especially those that suffer from eye strain from active 3D screens. And, comfort when viewing is a must, right?
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you why someone wouldn’t want to see this under their tree this year. It would definitely give that ‘wow’ effect everyone hopes to get from their chosen gifts to others. If you are doing some pre-Christmas shopping, Visions had this TV on for $800 off , maybe you need a new tube to watch the ball drop for 2012!

NICE! This is great info! I had no idea that regular movies could be turned into 3D either, LOL! I would have to come visit you and test out this TV before I could buy it though. I tend to get motion sick VERY easily, and 3D movies make me ill… so this is one I’d definitely want to test out on the smaller ‘home version’ scale before jumping in. Thanks for the review. VERY helpful!

That image of Assassin’s Creed would be cool on a 3D TV!
