Cake Decorating with Wilton

Decorating cakes is a craft, and it’s one that I have been working on for many years. My passion started at the birth of my oldest daughter with the intense drive to make beautiful birthday cakes {100% made by me}, instead of opting for store bought cakes. Thankfully through the years, I’ve had Cake Decorating with Wilton on my side. They are constantly coming up with tools and products to make cake decorating easier and more fun {’cause making that perfect cake can come with its fair-share of tears along the way!}.

One such marvelous Wilton product line is the Wilton Punch. Cut. Decorate!. This line consists of genius food-grade “punches” {think of patterned paper punches}, which make cutting shapes and designs from sugar sheets, fondant, and gum paste a whole lot simpler.

Before I get ahead of myself, let me say that before using the Wilton Punch.Cut.Decorate line, I had never worked with sugar sheets {nor fondant} before. Seriously. But why? Because the thought left me panicked, only professionals decorate with sugar sheets and fondant, right? I soon learned that I couldn’t be more wrong!

My first step, after making my layered cake was to cover it with fondant. Afraid of leaving it up to me seeking a recipe, I used the Ready-To-Use White Rolled Fondant. It was so easy to work with, my goodness! I was left with a smooth and pretty covered cake in no time – my very first time!

Now to decorate using the accessories! The Punch Set With Oval Cutting Insert has a white spring-loaded base, a bottom plate, a top plate, and a silicone cap. There are many Single Shape Punches in the Cutting Insert line {all with their own design}, so you just need to pop in a top plate and punch a Wilton sugar sheet. Once you have a punch, you can collect the different shape plates to use with it. There’s even Border Punch Sets, to make nice patterned borders, which I really had some fun with for my cake.

Wilton Sugar Sheets come in 9 patterns and 12 solid colors, and are paper-backed sheets of thin edible icing. So, they are flexible to work and surprisingly, they are fairly durable {I had only assumed they would rip, but they don’t very easily}. When punching out shapes, the tip to pat some icing sugar on the plates is key – then the sheets don’t stick and they cut a lot smoother.

To make it even easier, Wilton has many Punch. Cut. Decorate Accessories to help along the way. There is the Cake Marker, which is a helpful tool that gives confidence in placing level shapes or borders. I’m pretty picky and precise when I decorate cakes, so I thought the Cake Marker was a great tool to use. As well, there’s the Wilton Rotary Cutter, a simple way to make straight or wavy lines, without using a knife {which can tear the sheets}.

I decided to make a girly-flower cake, since the girls were so excited and of course, claimed the cake as their own. They buzzed about me while I decorated the cake, and their eyes popped in amazement when I revealed the final look. Their shouts of ‘WOW, MOM” is why I love making and decorating cakes. It’s the moment you show off your creation, made with love….and a little help from Wilton!

I cannot wait to make my Halloween and Christmas holiday cakes! Maybe I’ll try my Punch. Cut. Decorate supplies on rolled fondant this time, make more of a 3D effect?
Watch out Cake Boss!
