Boon Potty Bench Review

I have to say, I really chuckled at Boon‘s description of their Potty Bench, “Cartoon versions of grown-up toilets don’t make kids want to use the potty. They make parents want to throw out tacky baby products”. And, I have to say that I agree. When the girls outgrow a baby-looking toy and it leaves my house, I do the happy dance. I much prefer useful products that don’t scream, “this house is being over-run and taken over by kids!!”. And this is why I was really taken with the Boon Potty Bench the first time I saw it. It has a clean and modern look that doesn’t stand out for having bells, whistles or goofy characters – it’s the style and smart design which makes every parent take notice.

That being said, I was thrilled to get a Potty Bench for review from Boon. The design includes two handy enclosed storage areas on either side. One side even has a toilet paper holder, yet admittingly I won’t be giving the Twins free-rein of that stuff yet! Yet the compartments are perfect for books and little toys to keep them occupied while they sit. And, since the sides close up so neatly {some people were shocked to see they were there – very well hidden!} there’s never a mess to clean up and no clutter to be seen. Once the girls are in that stage, I can keep an extra pair of panties or wipes in there too.

The drawer slides out for emptying the potty. The sturdiness and the design for fitting just right, keep the Twins from ever trying to empty it themselves. Yet the feature that most impressed me is that when the potty lid id closed, it becomes a step stool. And this step stool is just awesome as it holds up to a whopping 300 lbs!

Now, when I compare it to other potty chairs we have had in our home {I tried a few brands with my oldest daughter}, this is why I prefer the Boon Potty Bench:

  • The total height of the bench is approx 6″ off the ground. This makes it more comfortable and secure for little ones, as their feet can be planted firmly on the ground
  • The potty hole is smaller than all others I have had. The size makes it no less functional, yet adds to the feeling of security for children
  • I have witnessed many children, including my own, get onto potty chairs from the side or at an angle. This may be due to not trusting what is behind them yet. In any case, the Boon Potty Bench has a flat and wide surface, making it easy and natural to sit down no matter what angle they come from.
  • The entire bench is wide and very sturdy – there is no slipping and sliding with this bench, adding to the feeling of security. As well, my oldest used to always push herself off a potty with one hand on the side. Can you guess how many times she has tipped over said chair when doing so? There is no chance of this happening with the Boon Potty Bench, making it more mess-free, safe and less frightening for children.
  • For doubling as a step stool, this bench won me over completely. I always had a potty chair and a step stool in the bathroom, making for a crowded bathroom. And you know how much I love multi-functional items! Best of all, anyone can use it as a step stool. Even I use it to change the light bulbs or get the shower curtain down!

If you are in the market for a potty bench, I can only say how much I like having one in my home. Not only do the kids like it, but it’s functional and come in such stylish colors too. Unlike other ‘baby products’ that come and go, this is one that will be around for a long time. And you know what? I don’t mind at all!

& I completely agree that potties don’t need to look like a toy! When I went looking for one for my son, it took me many trips to different stores to find a plain one & what was even more horrible is that plain ones cost just as much as the “toy” ones!
