Hooked On Phonics; Learn To Read

Hooked On Phonics worked for Isabelle!
Since my review of the Hooked On Phonics Learn To Read Pre-K Edition, I am amazed at how far she has come. Before this fantastic program, I had no idea where and how to start teaching her. Especially since she had no interest in it, at all! Hooked on Phonics has taught her the recognition of letters, and the sounds each one makes. And, to her, it was so easy and fun. Seriously, all day she walks around saying things like,
“Sssss…..Ssss – Snake starts with the letter S”
and “Mom….Mom…Mmmm starts the word Mom”.
This great accomplishment of hers really kick-started her path to learning, and I am a huge fan of Hooked On Phonics.

As you know, Isabelle started Kindergarten last week. And, to help her continue her learning, Hooked On Phonics sent us the Learn To Read Kindergarten Complete. It was developed by leading educators, award-winning authors, teachers and parents. And, if you are new to the Hooked On Phonics method, it teaches by way of simple sounds and phonics. Kids start easy and simple and build upon what they already know.
The Kindergarten series is a 2 box set (Level 1 & 2) and it includes all of the following:

  • 12 Storybooks
  • 2 Celebrated Author Storybooks
  • 2 workbooks
  • 2 DVDs
  • Quick Start Guide (for parents)
  • 2 sets of stickers (for jobs well done)
  • Access to my.hookedonphonics.com online Learn to Read experience for each lesson and unit

The Learn To Read Kindergarten Complete teaches: Short a, Short i, Adding a ‘s’ to make plurals, Short o, Short u, Short e, -ck ending.
So, it covers beginning and ending sounds, short and long vowel words and also word combinations.
I think the focus on these at this skill and age level is ideal, as these specific sounds are what she has the hardest time with. So, it makes sense to work on them now before tackling the next level.

The Hooked On Phonics workbooks are always her favorite, they are simple and straightforward and she takes so much pride in them. Again, it always starts easy and builds up to more of an advanced level. Sometimes, we have to go back to the Pre-K edition for a refresher if she is having trouble with one particular letter. But, for the most part, she is doing great with the Kindergarten Learn To Read edition.
Isabelle just loves the Hooked On Phonics program, I cannot stress enough how much it has taught her. And since she had absolutely no prior interest, Hooked On Phonics has also given her the encouragement to try. By using the prior computer programs and lessons, and now the DVD’s, workbooks and reading books – there is so much fun variety that it doesn’t seem to be ‘learning’ to her. She is such a visual learner, and the methods of Hooked On Phonics allow her to learn by way of visual aids, small steps and practice.
We had spend so much time on the Pre-K edition, that I was worried that doing more at-home lessons, plus going to school would be too much of an overload for her. But, this program is designed to be effective with just 20 minutes per day. And, since she enjoys it so much – she is so eager to learn. Finally!

Remember, the Learn to Read series is available from Pre-K to 4th Grade. And don’t forget, there is also the Math, Spelling, Early Concepts and language as well.
So, there are many valuable tools to assist kids, in all areas of education!
