Naturepedic Crib Mattress: As adults, we are overwhelmed with choices in mattresses for ourselves. And, the type we pick is a personal choice, and usually a careful careful choice to make at that. What about for babies? What kind of thought goes into the type of mattress they should be using? We hope and pray they have are comfortable, are safe and have a restful nights’ sleep. In fact, the mattress you choose for them to sleep on, may have more impact on their sleep and overall health than you think. After all, they spend 70% of their time sleeping!
We all remember a recent recall in popular kids toys and products, which contained Phthalates. This lead to a ban by the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA), of anything that was made of this plastic…but did you know that this same chemical is found in most crib mattresses? Yet, only 3 of the 6 known Phthalates were banned for use in crib mattresses. These Phthalates are known to affect a child’s developing endocrine (hormonal) system which may cause asthma, allergies and even cancer. Phthalates are so hazardous to the health, that they have already been banned in many countries around the world.
As a mother, this infuriates me to no end.
So that is the problem, and here is the solution:
Naturepedic is the first and only mattress company that designs and manufactures infant and children’s’ mattresses using natural and organic materials.
The research involved to develop these mattress was done in an Ohio testing and engineering lab. Pediatricians, orthopedic specialists, chemists, and engineers have all assisted in the design of this exclusive product.
The story behind this company is very intriguing, it involves a man trying to find a mattress for his grandchild. He found only ones made of harsh and dangerous chemicals such as PVC’s and polyurethane foam (petroleum). This scary realization provoked him and his sons to develop Naturepedic. And so, the healthier alternative to sleeping – awoke. (Ahh…I love stories such as these)
I was sent a Naturepedic Crib Mattress, the ‘No-Compromise’ Organic Cotton Ultra Crib Mattress, and you can probably guess how excited I was. Yet, when I took it out of the box and compared it to the mattress that I had been using, that excitement grew to shock and amazement. As you can tell from the picture, the other mattress is made of a hard vinyl that crinkles when touched. And, from my experiences from sleeping at summer camp, I know how uncomfortable it is. The Naturepedic mattress is soft and a little plumper than the other, yet still firm. Words just cannot describe the difference between the two. The luxury and softness of organic cotton just can’t be beat! I have many times wanted to crawl in there myself, it feels that comfortable!
The look and feel of the Naturepedic Crib Mattress is not the only important quality. It’s what the Naturepedic mattress is made of, that really counts. I already said it was made of 100% Organic Cotton, and yet it is still waterproof as well. Other mattresses use the most toxic plastic material available today, PVC’s and Vinyl – to make their mattresses waterproof. The Naturepedic mattress uses 100% Food Grade Polyethylene. This prevents the growth of mold and fungus, and makes an easy to clean surface as well. Babies spend 10-14 hours breathing in what the mattress releases, and the other mattresses are packed full of chemicals. Besides the lungs, it’s also a cause for concern for those with sensitive skin and eczema (like my daughters). To prevent rashes up until now, I had switched detergent and soaps and the type of fabric I was buying for their clothing. But, not once did I realize that what they were sleeping on, may have been the biggest factor in their skin problems. The Naturepedic mattresses contain no allergy-causing materials.
The size of the mattress is just a tad bit larger than my old (and very dangerous) standard crib mattress that I used to use. It was a tight squeeze fitting it into the crib, and most of my crib sheets don’t fit onto the Naturepedic mattress. But, I do have one that does (thankfully). When I was putting that crib sheet on, another question came to mind: does the fabric of the crib sheets I use, add to my girls’ eczema as well? It’s a good thing that Naturepedic also carries a full line of other mattress sizes (Ohh…one for me!), change pads, and sheets and bedding as well. As they say, everything you need to ‘Sleep healthy & Grow Healthy’.
Naturepedic is respected and recognized with iparenting, the First Candle SIDS Alliance, plus many other agencies dedicated to the very best for baby. They have also met the strict certification standards with GREENGUARD and are a member of the Organic Trade Association.
Naturepedic has proven to me to be the very best, in the fight for protection of our children. They offer safe and quality mattresses that will be proudly used in our house for many years (remember, the crib mattress is also used in toddler beds – so you’ll get so much use out if it!) Do I recommend Naturepedic products? You bet I do! 100% To me, there is no ignoring the proven hazardous items made for children. It is up to us to take a stand and support those who strive to supply only the best and safest products for them. Their health and well being are safely in the hands of companies such as Naturepedic.
