Ecover

There’s one thing that I do in this house more than I’d like to…clean! I’m always tiding up, picking up and wiping up this and that. It never ends (you’re all nodding right now, aren’t you Mom’s) In my linen closet is a box full of cleaning supplies. FULL. Yep, I have tried every brand out there. Products made for specific tasks and multi-cleaners, which usually don’t cut it for all anyway. My latest buy is a harsh cleanser which leaves your nose burning and your eyes watering. Bad, bad purchase. In my quest for a cleaner house, I also have a duty to care for the environment as well as my own families health.
Ecover is ecologically, economically and socially responsible in their line of detergents and cleaning products. They even have the world’s first ecological factory located in Malle, Belgium – complete with a grass roof. (I’m picturing ‘bio dome’…) The company has received global recognition from the United Nations Environment Program, what an honor! Their cleansers and packaging are made with the environment and the people within, in mind. As a consumer, I appreciate that each and every product has a complete ingredient listing on the site, Right down to the packaging material!
As I said, I like things clean. My husband on the other hand, likes to sanitize. He is a self-proclaimed clean-freak and perfectionist – to the worst degree. So, when Ecover sent some of their cleaning products our way – he was more than eager to do the reviewing. And, I was more than happy to hand them over. (Ahhh…Mommy got a bit of a break here)

The Toilet Bowl Cleaner was the first one he tried. And the first thing he said, “Did you smell this stuff?” (…Um, No…) So, he proceeded to shove the Toilet cleaner under my nose saying, “What does this smell like?” I passed the test immediately. Buckleys! Yes, the cough syrup that tastes bad, but works. DO NOT taste the toilet cleaner! But, does it work? Well, my husband, a ‘natural product’ skeptic said, “This is actually really good stuff!” (And the medicine smell, which wasn’t that bad – did go away after a couple of minutes)So, it does work! Ecover’s Toilet Bowl Cleaner did the job without the burn to the nose and eyes.

The second product was the Stain Remover and it’s intended for grease and protein stains (for clothing). And, like watching a pot of water boil – when I wanted my kids to stain their clothes, they didn’t. I watched and waited for over a week. Nothing. So, I purposely dirtied an article of clothing. (I can say, I’ve never done that before!!!) It was fun smearing a bunch of stuff out of the fridge onto an old (yet unstained) shirt. I rubbed in milk, ketchup, jam, some jarred green beans (baby food) and an egg. I let it sit for an hour, applied just a bit of stain remover and washed. Came clean! I like to leave stain remover in the nursery closet – to apply before I toss items in the basket. I like the fact that I am able to use this in such a small space without filling the room with the smell of chemicals!
