Mother Daughter Date Ideas

With three daughters and an obviously chaotic schedule, finding time to connect with each of my kids individually, is pretty tough to pull off. As much as I’d love to have more time, energy, and resources to designate ample opportunities to ‘just be with’ one child at a time, it’s oftentimes not feasible.

Yet if the conditions are just right {my husband isn’t away working, or activities and the schedule separates the kids anyway}, I love to steal away just one of my children for some one-on-one bonding. For the kids, it gives them that undivided attention they crave; and allows us as parents to give that attention to them – with much less distraction.

If you are thinking, ‘yikes. I don’t do that often‘, please don’t stress about it, we’ve all been there. I’ve come to realize the value in quality over quantity, so when our mother daughter dates happen, know that it’ll be special for us both, and will be a lasting memory. Parent/kid dates really don’t have to be a big deal – what you do together can be simple to elaborate if you so wish. It’s surprising how much the little and simple activities mean to kids.

With Mother’s Day coming up and the reflection on parenting {and the kids excited about what they get to do together on this day}, it’s it’s helpful to have already thought about date ideas because they are oftentimes done on the fly. They key is focus on showing your kids that they are valued, and that you want to take the time to really get to know them. My three daughters are the most fascinating people I know, and having Mother Daughter dates is a great way to strengthen that bond, and have some fun too.

Picnic at the Park – This is one thing we are all looking forward to now that the warmer months have arrived. Fresh air, outdoor play, good food, and great conversation!

Long Walks {with the Dog} – After the days chaos is done, this is a great way to spend an evening and get some exercise too! Stop and admire flowers and analyze cloud shapes!

Spa Day – Either booked for a special treat, or even a spa day created at home – think manicures, pedicures, doing hair {get the dolls involved!}.

Coffee Date – It’s not just fun for adults – my kids love going for ‘coffee’, beverages and a treat bring out the conversation.

Outdoor Market – We love going to markets, even if it’s just to wander. Take your time, have no destination in mind and just stroll together.

Volunteer – Doing an activity together that gives back is a win/win. It’s a great way to spend time together, make a difference and teach that it’s important to devote time and efforts into causes.

Bake or Cook – All of my girls love spending time creating in the kitchen {I wonder where they got that from?}, they get such a sense of pride when helping or being able to cook or bake themselves. Some of my fondest memories are when I helped my Mom in the kitchen, pass it on!

Create – What are your childs interests when it comes to creating? Depending on this and age you could colour, do a puzzle, paint pottery or even make a fairy garden for summer!

Dinner Date – Not done often, yet it’s something that would make a big impact. Make it extra special by dressing up and making it a fancy occasion. You could even do this at home and combine ideas by cooking together, getting out the fancy plates and napkins – don’t forget a place setting for their favourite doll!

Movie Night – Create a movie date for two with their favourite snacks and no distractions!

Take a Class – When the date is planned, look into classes available at local stores or your towns community centre. There might be a great cooking class or even a self-defence class that are geared to Mothers and Daughters.

Go Shopping – If you ask my oldest what she’d want to do when it’s just us – she will always pick shopping. Why not make your to-do {to-puchase} list into a Mother Daughter Date event?

I recently went shopping with just my oldest as she needed a new pair of shoes for her upcoming end of season Cheerleading banquet. Since it was a task that had to be done anyway, I decided it was the perfect excuse for us to have a Mother Daughter Date. First we shopped for a new dress, then went to The Shoe Company for footwear to match.

Since it’ll be summer soon and the dress she chose is casual, we had sandals in mind. Wedges, ballerina-style, strappy – so many options!

After trying on and debating on many pairs {and also asking a saleslady her opinion}, my daughter decide on a ‘ROXY Porto Flip-flops’ in a nice cream colour that complements her navy sundress perfectly. Not only were they on sale, but I also had accumulated enough Shoe Lovers Rewards to get an additional $10 off! Even though they were purchased for a specific event, it’s sandals that will be worn casually all summer long!

Actually, there’s a Mother’s Day Gift Card Promotion that ends May 8th – get a $15 Cash Card with $100 Gift Card purchase OR a $5 Cash Card with $50 Gift Card purchase {Redemption period: May 15-31, 2016}. This is a great gift idea for Mother’s Day!

We had so much fun during our shopping afternoon – my tween even held my hand and hugged me in public! Now that the dress and shoes have been purchased, my daughter and I have a hair and pamper date planned before we attend her annual banquet next weekend.

We’re both looking forward to our next date together – the excitement that builds is part of the fun too!

  1. I only have boys in my house, but we do have a date day as often as were able to. I would love to do once a week that really once a month seems to be what we do. These are some great ideas even for a boy.

  2. Shoes are a common interest of me and my daughter! Love the idea of a shoe date night with my daughter.

  3. My only daughter died in an auto accident when she was seventeen. I’m one of the lucky moms who had an awesome close relationship with their teenage daughter. Britt was a cheerleader in high school and college and I was the team mom. That’s the way she wanted it. We did everything together. Because of that, I have many precious memories. Her father (my was-band) was a firefighter and worked 24 hours shifts. Britt slept with me when her dad wasn’t home. We’d lay in bed and talk for hours!
Now I’m making precious memories with my grand daughter. Our favorite is reading books out loud together. Right now we’re reading ‘The Boxcar Children’. And, she loves our mani/pedi dates!

  4. These are all such great ideas. I need to have some of these date nights with my girls. I know they would love it too. I’m going to make sure to plan a day for my daughters and I to do something from this list.

  5. I love that you take the time to spend time individually with your kids. It is definitely difficult because we all do get busy. My mother used to try, she did the shopping days – unfortunately I am not a shopper so I was always miserable. Now that I am older I appreciate that she at least tried. My boys and I get out and go hiking together – we enjoy it and it gets us away from everything.

  6. I’m not a mother myself but I have two nieces that I spend LOTS of time with. Unfortunately, I can’t even say the last time I just did something with one of them. They always have to be in pairs but once in awhile, I’d like to take them out just them for a special day. I think the last time I did such a thing was years ago when the youngest was still a baby.

  7. My Daughter and i like to go and have a Spa day together. It is a great way to relax and spend time together.

  12. This mother’s day is extra special. We are going baby shopping because I just found out I am going to be a grandma!

  13. My daughter and I try to take advantage of every professional day off school to do a mother/daughter date; she’s a tween and we go shopping, go for lunch, go to movies. She also gets every friday off at noon so we do something small in those afternoons like go to Starbucks for a treat. It’s always been important to me to spend quality time together.

  14. These are all great ideas. My daughter and I have shopping dates at least twice a month. We have lunch, coffee, and shop until we drop. She is my best friend.
