12 Things to be Thankful for in Life

“We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.”  – Cynthia Ozick

Thanksgiving is a time for much more than stuffing our faces full of delicious food. This is the day designated as a time of reflection, and for giving thanks to each and every facet of life.

Why is this important? Because, it’s your life. Your only life.

Oftentimes gratitude is given to health, happiness, and family. Yet this is a pretty broad statement and each encompasses much more than a one-word explanation.

It’s only when you dive deeper into the smallest aspects of your life that you recognize and appreciate those tiny yet crucial parts, which are oftentimes overlooked.

With the Thanksgiving holiday coming near, now is a great time to remind you of these small yet significant things.

Your Surroundings

When was the last time you paused the chaos of life to truly appreciate absolutely everything that surrounds you? The constants that we depend on are often overlooked because they are always there. It could be the ray of sun finding its way through the blinds, onto your cheeks, or how soft your favourite slippers are. It’s the small daily pleasures that deserve the recognition.

Those Who Share our Lives

Friends and family make up the bulk of our ‘loved ones’ category. Yet don’t forget some gratitude for those who play smaller yet just as significant roles in our lives. Each person who shares this life with you, is important, right down to the strangers you meet which brighten your day with a smile.

Nourishment

Be thankful for access to replenishment, food and everything else that feeds the mind, body and soul. They are all nourishments which are requirements of this life.

To Move and Be Active

To be thankful for life, means acknowledging that you live. ‘Health’ varies from person to person, so if you are able to dance today – that is something to be thankful for. Being able to breathe, smell, smile, and fidget are all things which make you – you. So smile more, dance often, and take a deep breath. Today you live and that should be celebrated.

To Rest and Get Sleep

Just as important as being alert and mobile is the ability to rest and sleep. Your body needs to recharge, and it doesn’t care about your to-do list or a work deadline. So be thankful for being tired, as it means your days are accomplished and full.

Safety and Security

Living a safe and secure life gives us the freedom to live days to the fullest, without restraint. Don’t forget to give thanks to whatever or whoever provides you with safety and security.

Silliness

Adults taught themselves for years to be mature, responsible and driven – yet silliness is a big part of life. This life of yours deserves much laughter, giddiness, and silliness as it can handle. It’s those times that make lasting memories, so make the most you possibly can.

Love

To be loved and to give love, this emotion is everywhere. It can be in a warm hug, a genuine smile, a sunrise, or in a comforting cup of hot chocolate. Acknowledge who and what makes you feel love – and be thankful that life gives us this at each and every turn, even in the most unexpected of ways.

Wisdom

If you have it, share it; and always be open to the wisdom from others. Life is all about lessons and growth – we are all teachers in a sense, so don’t hold back.

Good and Bad Times

We all have both the good and bad times, yet they do shape us into who we are. Either celebrate those times or celebrate that you made it through them – they are all moments that shouldn’t be taken for granted.

Faith and Hope

Be thankful that these two things are available to anyone who needs them, and at any time.

For Life in Itself

… Because without it, none of the above is possible.
