Dyson DC66 Animal Review

If you scour through my blog, you’ll see that I am a #DysonFanGirl. Years ago I had one impressive introduction to the brand, when their upright filled an entire canister of yuck – immediately after I vacuumed my house with my current vacuum. I was grossed out, blown away and deliriously excited at the same time.

Fast forward to now and you’ll see quite a few Dyson products in my home. Uprights, the digital slim {a little ninja that tackles small jobs with ease} and the modern looking Dyson Fans which cool the house yet are simple to clean and so kid-friendly.

It only goes without saying, when offered the chance to review the newest upright to join the family, I agreed. Obviously.

Meet the Dyson DC66 Animal. AKA: the leader of the pack.

You see, this newest full-size model to hit Canada has some pretty remarkable upgrades.

The Dyson DC66 is part of their “Animal” line of upright vacuums, perfect for pet owners who really want to get all that hair {and dander} that tangles in household fibres {or car upholstery}. Even those without pets will appreciate this powerhouse in suction power when it comes to the animal lines.

Now, the animal line is not new to Dyson, yet the amount of power in this particular model is – a 25% power increase thanks to remodeled cyclones and the latest in Ball technology and improvements to air flow. When compared to the other line of uprights, and past models of animals themselves – the difference is very noticeable. In fact, you know it’s getting deep down when you literally see the tracks in the carpet.

I always loved that my Dyson products got right to the edge of the baseboards when cleaning, and I never had any complaints about the performance of this clean. Yet somehow even this feature has gotten better. The brilliant Dyson engineers have stripped back the design of the cleaner head, so that the brush bar has end to end coverage. In my trials, the previous models went to the edge {which is fantastic} yet the Dyson DC66 seems to suck out even dirt trapped under the baseboards. So again, it’s taking something great and making it better.

Another worthy upgrade {there are tons, right?} is that the cleaner head is now self-adjusting. With the DC66, it automatically adjusts to various types of floors. From carpet to laminate, hardwood and more – the Dyson DC66 does it all. Since most of us have varying types of floors in our home, we’ll all appreciate not having to change heads to get the job done. Cause really, who has time for that?

Ensuring you have a deep clean of everything imaginable, the Dyson DC66 attachments help in that department.

There’s also a Tangle-free Turbine tool to remove dirt and hair from carpets and upholstery. With its self-adjusting cleaner head and re-engineered brushbar, bristles dig deeper into carpets to remove more dust and dirt, while providing superior performance on hard floors.

This redesigned Turbine tool is a new feature and one of the highlights of the Dyson DC66. This means that we don’t have to pick out strings and hair from the brushbar, it simply doesn’t get tangled. Sweet!

The Articulating hard floor tool is new, and it’s got different lengths of bristles to scrub the floors as it sucks. This of generous width, so perfect for larger hard surfaces yet it’s very short so it can go under furniture so well. It’s also thin enough to go in between narrow gaps making it my fave for in-between the kitchen appliances!

The Stiff bristle brush is another great attachment that is smaller, so it’s perfect for spot cleaning. The bristles are more stiff than the hard floor tool, so it’s great for scrubbing dried up messes like mud-prints off the kitchen floor. As well, I like this one in the van, this time of year attracts dried stubborn mud everywhere!

Since it is an ‘animal’ after all, the grooming tool allows you to literally pet and vaccumn your furry friend at the same time. It pulls up free hair and self-cleans while doing it, so that hair doesn’t get stuck in the attachment itself.

One great improvement in the Dyson DC66 Animal {that my DC43 Animal, the 2012 model, didn’t have} is the storage right on the vacuum for a couple of attachments. I don’t like hunting down and fetching the certain attachments that I use almost every time like the combination dusting and crevice tool, as well as an upholstery tool. So, it’s a timesaver to have them right there at all times.

Once again, I adore the long wand and hose that has ample reach to clean up and down a flight of stairs, without moving the vacuum. The cord is very long, and I only have to re-plug once in order to get the entire main floor clean.

The vacuum itself is durable, which is needed for those crash-into-the-walls incidents {we all have them}. It’s mostly built of durable ABS plastic, the same plastic that is used in riot shields and police helmets. So, it’s it’s made to last yet not as heavy as one one think. I find it easy to carry around the house, as seldom as I actually do.

Backed by the famous Dyson 5 year warranty, you can be sure that this will be a dependable bagless vacuum that you’ll be happy with for years to come. This is coming from one happy long-time Dyson owner.

The upgrades, the design, the performance/power and that awesome Ball Technology which allows for easy manoeuvrability with a simple twist of the wrist.

Dyson really raised the bar with the Dyson DC66 – it is the leader of the pack!

  1. I bought my Dyson Animal a while back and it came with no attachments but I could use that Articulating hard floor tool, will have to check their site to see if they are selling it.

    1. Happy to give some attachment recommendations to you! Let me know if you find one, I’d love to know what you discover on this! 😉

  2. I’ve been itching to get a Dyson for a while now, and this one looks amazing. With two shedding dogs, one of them a German Shepard, this vacuum would definitely get a workout!

  3. This is great to know how well it works on tile and wood – for we have no carpet in the house. I think I will have to check this one out when we are due for a new vac.

  4. I’ve never used a Dyson. It looks like a great vacuum! I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone NOT like their Dyson. 🙂

  5. I LOVE my Dyson! People wonder why the hype is… until they talk to me. They are the most amazing. If we get a bigger house, I will have to upgrade mine, for sure!

  6. I love the Tangle-free Turbine tool to remove dirt and hair from carpets and upholstery – brilliant!

  7. I remember when we upgraded from our cheap-we-just-moved-in vacuum to our slightly-more-expensive cat and dog vacuum. I was so happy. It actually puffed our carpets back up!

    1. That clean feeling is wonderful, isn’t it?! WHY did we used to spend money on ones that needed replacing so often!? GAH!!!

  8. MUST. HAVE. A. DYSON. Pardon me while I clean up the drool… I have wanted a Dyson forever. This one definitely tops them all!

  9. We have an older Dyson and I wouldn’t trade it for anything… It is super-light and picks up everything… I especially love that it is bag-less… those bags were always such a hassle

  10. This sounds like a great vacuum! Mine is on its last legs, so I may buy a vacuum in the dyson series

  11. Would love to get this Dyson, but it’s way to expensive for me, I still use my original yellow Dyson and it still runs great!! but having 3 dogs, 1 cat and a husband it would great to upgrade!

    1. I have that one too and yes, it still works great! I’m taking it to the trailer this summer, gotta get that baby clean!

  12. I do love my Dyson, although if I had the choice to do over I would take a canister over the upright. The ball design leaves the vacuum requiring a certain number of inches in height clearance, and my standard issue bed frame sits lower than this meaning I literally need to move the bed in order to vacuum under it. Luckily the room is 14 ft long, so that is possible. People with heavy furniture may be hampered by this. And the width of the head means I actually cannot vacuum along side the toilet as there isn’t enough space between the toilet and wall to get to the lint. Turning the upright sideways is a not. The weight of it may be an issue to some people as well. Overall, love it! It has saved me from tossing an area rug and will make the carpeting last longer for sure!

    1. I think if I’m reading this right Wendy {and pardon me if I’m not}, but have you tried using the attachments? I use the scopes and the tool, and I can get right under the bed no problem. Unless maybe you don’t have the attachments? Yes, this one is a heavier Dyson by about 4-5 pounds, versus a few others – yet animals are heavier due to the increased size and extra power. Again, you have to choose what is right for you – the Digital Slim is my saviour sometimes for that reason!! Glad to hear it saved the rug, I think it’s saved my sanity most – you should have seen the box of cereal my kids spilled the other day. I’ll paint a picture for you – family size box. GAH!!! 🙂

  13. I don’t own a Dyson, YET! I did use one at a friends house, no other vacuum compares…they really are incredible!

  14. I love my dyson, nothing compares to the power these machines have! Always pick up more than my other vacuums ever could.

  15. I am a huge dyson fan. At first I thought it was all hype and no results, until I tried one out. I love the suctioning power and all the different attachments. It really does make vacuuming less time consuming.

  16. I have a dyson that I love. I’d really love to get the animal vacuum as we have 3 cats and the amount they shed, we could make a 4th!

  17. I’ve wanted a Dyson for so long! Hopeing to get the money together in the next few months.

  18. I’ve wanted a Dyson for so long! Hopeing to get the money together in the next few months.

  19. My kids want a dog… this would be a much-needed tool to keep the house clean. I’m definitely looking into it!

  20. This is what I just heard this week from a friend of mine. She said I was using vacuum X with the dog and then my husband bought the dyson and brought it home and I used it and the canister was full. So that made her wonder how crappy the other vacuum had been doing and for how long.
