Make at Home : Pumpkin Spice Latte

This homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte recipe is quick and easy to make, and affordable compared to the coffee shop version. Made with pumpkin puree and cozy fall spices.

While I am a summer girl through and through, there are some perks about the fall season. Baggy sweaters, crisp leaves, and pumpkin spice lattes.

Available at Starbucks for only a limited time each year, the world seems to go crazy over the popular fall flavor of a delicious pumpkin spice latte.

Yet, it’s also costly. And the lines are long, especially during starbucks’ most popular seasonal beverage.

Surely this starbucks pumpkin spice latte can be made at home, no?

So, I scoured the internet looking for a homemade version, and did find a many copycat recipes. I tried a few.

I decided that the best recipe must use real pumpkin puree and not just spice.

The best drink has that bold and natural pumpkin flavor. This here is the perfect recipe for a PSL recipe.

Plus, the milk had to ‘froth’ just like in store, and not just a blended drink. It’s part of the charm, right? I do suggest a Handheld Frother of some sort. It adds to the drink, just like whipped cream would.

My game changed when I got an espresso machine, yet for a long time I just used really strong coffee for this easy recipe.

Now I find more often than not, I’m making my own pumpkin spice lattes at home and not buying one from a local coffee shop.

They just taste better, are cheaper, and I can customize it to my own taste much easier.

Homemade PSL Ingredients

Here are some notes on the simple ingredients you’ll need. As always the printable recipe card is at the end of the post.

  • Milk: I use whole milk to get that full creamy taste, though you could use skim milk. Feel free to use your preferred kind of milk such as: almond milk, soy milk, cashew milk, coconut milk, or oat milk if desired.
  • Espresso or strong coffee: If using strong hot coffee, make sure it’s STRONG.
  • Pumpkin purée: or canned pumpkin. Just make sure it is not pumpkin pie filling, as that has different ingredients and spices to it.
  • Spices: I love to use a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, ground ginger, and ground cloves. There is also a store bought pumpkin spice blend, which you can use if desired.
  • Vanilla extract: I just love the warm vanilla taste and natural flavors. I think this also brings out the pumpkin pie spices too.
  • Brown Sugar: you need some form of sweetener to the drink. This is my favourite choice for a natural sweetener. You can also use maple syrup.
  • Whipped Cream: For that final touch and creaminess.

How to Make a Pumpkin Spice Latte

  1. Place a small saucepan on the stove and turn onto medium heat. Add the milk, cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, pumpkin, and brown sugar. Mix until steaming, yet not boiling.
  2. Remove pan from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. Pour the milk mixture into a large blender and blend milk until frothy. You can also use a Handheld Milk Frother.

NOTE: Be very careful because hot liquids expand MUCH more than cool ones, so blend half of mixture at a time, if needed.
  4. Mix half coffee and half mixture into your favorite mug.
  5. Top your homemade lattes with whipped cream and a sprinkling of cinnamon or a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice.

Recipe Variations

Tips to customize your delcious latte recipe.

  • Iced pumpkin spice latte: Pour all over a full cup of ice for a delicious cold brew.
  • Chai pumpkin spice latte: Steep 2 chai tea bags in a 1/2 cup of very hot water for a few minutes. Use this instead of the espresso or coffee, and you’ll have a wonderful chai pumpkin latte.
  • Mocha pumpkin spice latte: Add 3 teaspoons of cocoa powder.
  • Peppermint Mocha Latte: Add cocoa powder and a tsp of peppermint extract
