A Canadian Vampire-Princess for Halloween

Each and every year my daughter and I have the same conversation about what she should be for Halloween. She always wants to be a princess or some sort of teen actress/musician. I roll my eyes at the lack of willingness to ‘ghoul’ it up, always wanting to make/purchase anything that doesn’t require pastel colors and sequins!! But, a princess I have, so I always suck it up and compromise. By the term ‘compromise’ I mean that I do have restrictions on the sorts of costumes that my kids can wear – they can’t be skimpy. I’m not talking about coverage for modesty, but for warmth! We do live in Canada after all! It can be pretty chilly darn cold come late October. So, Tinker Bell and any other short-skirt-short-sleeve costume, just won’t be seen around here!

Again this year {after I said a firm not to a fairy} we had another Cinderella costume discussion, “Really hun? You wear the Cinderella dress around the house most days of the week! Can we think outside the box this Halloween?!”.

I know, I take all the fun out of Halloween, right?

A week later my daughter really surprised me when she said, “Mom, I want to be a Vampire-princess this year”. After looking at her confused she explained that Vampires have long sleeves and a long dress, so it’ll be warm. My daughter also explained that it was different than usual, since they wear dark black colors and not pink. “…But, they have lace and frillies so they are still pretty. And maybe I can get a crown. But not a silver princess crown, a black crown … that’s still pretty, right?” she said, waving her hands all over her head like she was indeed crowning herself miss-thing.

She had a point, I guess. But I still chuckled at her wanting to try something new, while still holding onto the fact that a princess will always be a princess.

Another conversation later that day made me realize why she really wanted to be a Vampire-Princess, “Mom … But even Vampires need make-up. No blood or anything, eww. Maybe some black lipstick and some of your blush to make her look like she was alive just yesterday. That would really put the princess into the vampire.”

Oh my little sweetheart, you will always be my first princess!

Many thanks to BuyCostumes.com for sending Isabelle the Transylvanian Vampiress Child Costume for Halloween. It covers well and can allow for a layer to be worn underneath for warmth. Plus, she loves the look, a very pretty vampire princess indeed.
