Holiday Book Titles from Scholastic Canada

by Tammi on 11/29/2010 · 190 comments

When it comes to seasonal and holiday-themed books, ours aren’t packed away with all the decorations until that season comes. The kids love their Christmas books, and we read them year-round. It’s almost like a little holiday spirit all year long. Scholastic Canada has some great holiday gift book titles {pdf file of all the great titles}, and for all ages. We got a sampling of some Christmas books, and have been reading them either on the couch while sitting and looking at the lit tree or cuddled into bed after a long day. Reading is huge in this house, and holiday books sure do get us all excited for Christmas to come. Plus, it really helps to teach the twins about Santa and why we celebrate the holidays.

My daughter was first introduced to ‘The David’ books, when a friend gave my daughter a box of her son’s old books. My daughter quickly befriended these books, chuckling through them all. You see, David is like any typical kid, he’s always doing what every kid does to get into trouble. And like the stories and of David himself, the illustrations are full of the same boisterous energy. My daughter relates to David, but she’s always quick to point out how he should act. I have to laugh myself, as she does some of the same things – kids! In It’s Christmas, David!, David is up to no good when it comes to touching the tree, peeking at presents and being impatient the lineup to see Santa. I have to smile when reading this book, as I have already many times said, “Santa’s Going To Bring You A Lump Of Coal!” I guess every family sees themselves in the David books!

One of the wittiest books I have come across in a long time has got to be, “A Porcupine in a Pine Tree” written by Helaine Becker. This book is a funny {Canadian} take on the  “Twelve Days of Christmas”. Instead of the original version you’ll read {or sing}, Five Stanley Cups, Four Calling Moose, Three Beaver Tails, Two Caribou….and a porcupine in a pine tree! This book bring’s Christmas to Canada – it’s funny, clever and so true! The kids really like reading this book, since we sing while we go – and that makes this book so much fun!

We also got the title, ‘A Queen’s Secret‘ by Frieda Wishinsky. I read this when it first arrived and knew that this book would be the perfect stocking stuffer for Isabelle for Christmas morning, so I tucked it away until then. You see, my daughter, is a girly-girl and self-proclaimed princess. She has been trying really hard to convince me of what kind of clothes a princess should wear right down to the fact that she should have make-up for her purse – since that’s what princesses have. The Queen’s Secret is a story about the extravagant things that a Queen might have in her purse. Yet when the secret is revealed as to it’s contents….well, let’s just say, without ruining the secret, what she carries in her purse will definitely bring my daughter back to her 6 year old reality! It’s a cute story full of girly illustrations and pretty things – I know my daughter will adore this book! Plus, it’s written in simple rhyme and will be easy enough for her to read!

Watch you kids’ backpacks, parents, there’s plenty of fundraisers and specials this time of year. My daughter just brought home two books that Scholastic Canada donated to everyone in her class, for being such eager readers. I love how Scholastic supports our students and their quest in literature!

Holiday Gift Books by Scholastic Canada can be purchased on the website or in bookstores everywhere, and there are ones available for all ages and interests. Not only is reading a memorable way to spend time as a family, holiday books are really get you into that Christmas spirit, and make excellent stocking stuffers!

One Canadian reader is going to a copy of ‘A Porcupine in a Pine Tree‘ and ‘It’s Christmas, David!
